Read What Candidates Have to Say About Our Public Libraries

Election Day is Near. Learn where candidates stand on issues related to public libraries.
The Friends of the New Orleans Public Library, with the assistance of Every Library, recently conducted a survey of candidates running for mayor and for city council. The survey was created to gauge their support for public libraries and specifically looked at issues related to programs and facilities.
At present, we feel that the most pressing issue facing our library is the plan to maintain library locations. Library staff cannot deliver their quality services without functioning facilities. We applaud Library Director Emily Painton and her staff for the work that they have done to mitigate existing damage to branches, such as the renovation of the Children’s Resource Center. We look forward to the work they have scheduled for major projects such as roof and HVAC replacements at five locations. We urge all future city officials to do everything possible to support library staff  and see these much-needed repairs to completion.
